Diving Blue Heron Bridge
A very popular beach dive in Palm Beach County is at Phil
Foster Park called "Blue Heron Bridge". This dive site is very convenient;
parking is available right next to the sand. Depth ranges from 6 feet to 22 feet and the
variety of life is quite impressive. This dive should only be done around
high tide, while still allowing for 90 to 150 minute dives. It is an
excellent place to learn underwater photography. (See some of my
here. (I am a S.D.I.
Underwater Photography Instructor.)) You may see octopus, worms,
scorpionfish, squid, starfish, horseshoe crabs, sea horses, arrow crabs, puffer
fish, barracuda, stingrays, angelfish, flying gunard, robbin fish, urchins,
anenome, sea biscuit, and much more. If you are unfamiliar with the area,
I suggest that you hire a personal guide for
this dive. This is also a good site for snorkeling since the
addition of 'the snorkel trail' last year.
There are two dive sites at Blue Heron Bridge; "the east side" and "the west
side". Note that when people talk about diving "the west side" we do not
mean the west side of the intracoastal waterway; we mean the west side of Phil
When diving 'the west side' you must be a very good underwater navigator!
It is extremely easy to unintentionally end up in the boat channel. Boats
go through here very fast, you could get chopped up very easily.
When diving 'the east side' it will be easy to stay out of the boat channel,
however you will note that you will be diving very close to, or underneath of,
many boat docks.
Watch out for fishing line! I very much recommend carrying two cutting
devices when you dive.
If you are travelling into the area you might find
this map helpful.
